One in three pets goes missing in their lifetime. It happens to careful owners — a gate left ajar, a leash slipped, a firework spook. Don't waste time on guilt; spend it on the plan below. Most lost dogs are found close to home.

The first hour: search

  1. Check the house first. Closets, garage, under porches, behind furniture. A shocking number of "lost" dogs are asleep somewhere weird.
  2. Expand outward on foot. Bring treats, a leash, and your phone. Walk — don't drive — so your dog can hear and smell you. Call calmly; panicked shouting can push a scared dog further away.
  3. Leave a way back in. Dogs often circle home. Leave a gate or door open if you can do it safely, and put something that smells like you (a worn shirt, their bed) outside.
  4. Ask everyone you see. Dog walkers, delivery drivers, kids — anyone outside. Show a photo from your phone.

The first day: alert everyone

  1. Call your county shelter now. File a lost report the same day — stray holds are short. Then go in person and walk the kennels yourself; phone descriptions are unreliable and online listings lag. Bring photos, vet records, and proof of rabies vaccination. Shelter numbers for every NoVA county are on our Emergency Vet & Lost Dog page.
  2. File a free PawBoost alert at pawboost.com. Several NoVA shelters partner with PawBoost, so your alert feeds directly into their system, plus it generates a shareable flyer.
  3. Post on Petco Love Lost (petcolove.org) — its image-matching tech compares your dog's photo against found-pet listings.
  4. Hit Nextdoor and local Facebook groups. Neighborhood groups move fast for lost pets. Include a clear photo, the cross streets where your dog went missing, when, and your phone number. Ask people to share.
  5. Check your microchip registration. Log in to the chip company's site and confirm your phone number is current. A chip with an old number is a dead end.
  6. Call your vet. Good Samaritans often bring found dogs to the nearest vet to be scanned.

What is the first thing to do when your dog goes missing?

Search your house, yard, garage, and under porches first — many "lost" dogs are hiding nearby. Then expand outward on foot with treats, and call your county shelter to file a lost report the same day.

Where should I post a lost dog in Northern Virginia?

File a free PawBoost alert, post on Petco Love Lost and Nextdoor, and share in neighborhood Facebook groups. Include a clear photo, cross streets, and your phone number.

How long do shelters hold stray dogs?

Stray holds are short — often just days — so don't wait until morning to call. Go in person to check kennels; phone descriptions are unreliable.
