How this list works: every store below has a dog policy published by the company itself, on its official website, help page, or official press materials. Where a chain's policy varies by location or where state or local law can override it, we say so plainly. Policies change, so when in doubt, call your local store before you leash up.

National chains with corporate dog policies

Seven national chains whose corporate offices publish an official dog policy. Company policy is the floor, not the ceiling: individual stores can be stricter, so the notes below flag where to call first.

Lowe's

Multiple locations across Northern Virginia

Lowe's has one of the clearest dog policies in retail. Their official pet policy page states that Lowe's is a pet-friendly store welcoming service animals and pets. Dogs are expected to heel or walk calmly and must be leashed, harnessed, or carried while inside.

Dogs welcome

Tractor Supply Co.

Locations across Northern Virginia, including Loudoun and Prince William

Tractor Supply's own site says it plainly: "We welcome all animals to our stores as long as they are leashed." That covers dogs, cats, and the occasional farm animal. Keep your dog leashed and under control, and you're good.

Bass Pro Shops / Cabela's

Locations in the region, including the Ashburn area

The company's help page states that its retail stores are considered pet friendly, and pets are allowed in the store except where specifically prohibited by state or local laws. Leash your dog and check for any posted restrictions at the entrance.

Dogs welcome

PetSmart

Multiple locations across Northern Virginia

PetSmart's official In-Store Pet Policy permits domestic dogs and cats in stores, provided the pets are appropriately secured (leashed or safely confined) and vaccinated as appropriate for the type of pet. Management reserves the right to ask any disruptive pet to leave, so keep your dog close and under control.

Dogs welcome

Petco

Multiple locations across Northern Virginia

Petco's official FAQ states that any domesticated, licensed, vaccinated companion animals are welcome to accompany you on your visit to Petco. All visiting pets must be appropriately restrained, by leash, carrier, or travel habitat.

Dogs welcome

Pet Supplies Plus

Locations across Northern Virginia

Company messaging encourages shoppers to bring their leashed pets in-store while they shop. One caveat: many Pet Supplies Plus locations are independently franchised, so the welcome can vary from store to store. Call your local store first to confirm.

Leashed dogs welcome

Home Depot

Multiple locations across Northern Virginia

Here is the honest version: Home Depot's official corporate policy is service animals only. In practice, many locations are lenient and regularly allow well-behaved leashed dogs at the manager's discretion, but that is not the written policy. If you want to bring your dog, call your specific store first and ask, and respect the answer.

Local NoVA stores that welcome dogs

Four locally owned NoVA shops where dogs are part of the experience, not just tolerated.

Merrifield Garden Center

Merrifield (Falls Church), Fair Oaks (Fairfax), and Gainesville

Their official site states that all Merrifield Garden Center locations are pet friendly and welcome friendly dogs, with dogs required to remain on leash at all times. Wandering the greenhouses with your dog is one of the better weekend errands in NoVA. The Gainesville location even has its own dog park on site.

Leashed dogs welcome

The Dog Park

705 King St, Alexandria (Old Town)

This Old Town pet boutique states it outright: dogs and cats are welcome at the shop. It stocks collars, toys, treats, and accessories, plus grooming and daycare services. A natural stop on a King Street walk with your pup.

2772 S Arlington Mill Dr, Arlington (Shirlington) and 2509 Franklin Rd, Arlington (Clarendon)

A dog bakery and boutique with two Arlington locations, baking fresh treats daily and offering grooming. The whole business is built around dogs, and four-legged customers are welcome inside to sniff out a pupcake or pick a new toy.
