Grooming is the most hands-on service on this list — a stranger handling your dog with sharp tools for an hour or more. The best groomers are part stylist, part animal behaviorist. Here's how to find one.
What to look for
- Breed and coat experience. Doodles, double-coated breeds, and terriers all need different skills. Ask specifically about your dog's coat type.
- Low-stress handling philosophy. Look for groomers who talk about patience, breaks, and reading dog body language — or Fear Free certification.
- A clean, calm facility. Visit first. It should smell clean, sound reasonably calm, and the dogs there shouldn't look panicked.
- Safe drying practices. Ask how they dry dogs — cage dryers with heat are a red flag; hand drying or cool-air kennel dryers are the standard.
- An honest matted-coat policy. Severe matting sometimes has to be shaved for the dog's comfort. A good groomer explains this upfront instead of surprising you (or hurting your dog trying to brush it out).
- Clear what's included. Bath, cut, nails, ears, glands — know exactly what "full groom" means before you book.
Questions to ask
- How do you handle a dog that's anxious or fidgety?
- What's included in a full groom, and what costs extra?
- How long will my dog typically be there?
- Can I watch or stay for the first visit?
- What do you do if you find a lump, tick, or skin issue?
- How do you dry the dogs?
Red flags
- Won't let you see the grooming area.
- Vague about what's included or how long it takes.
- Rushes every dog through on a tight schedule.
- Asks nothing about your dog's temperament, health, or history.
- Dismisses your concerns about handling or equipment.
What it costs in NoVA
Roughly $60–$130 for a full groom, driven mostly by size and coat. Small smooth-coated dogs sit at the low end; large doodles and double-coated breeds at the high end (the doodle tax is real — that coat is labor). Nail trims alone run $15–$25.
